Sammed Shikharji is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for both communities(Digambara and Śvētāmbara) of the Jain Religion. It is located on the highest peak of Parasnath Hill in the Giridih district of Jharkhand, India. It is 160 km from the capital of Jharkhand (Ranchi). Parasnath Hill is also called the Himalayas of Jharkhand. Jainism 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras as having attained this salvation on Parasnath. Jainism’s 23rd Tirthankara (Bhagwan Parasnath) also received his salvation on this hill. The name of this hill is Madhuwan, only known by the name of the 23rd Tirthankara (Bhagwan Parasnath). Followers of the Jain religion from around the world come here to worship and pay a visit to the highest peak of the hill (Sammed Shikharji).
Recent: Shikharji movement
Based on a recommendation from the state government, the area was declared an eco-sensitive zone by the central government in August 2019. After this, the Jharkhand government issued a resolution on the recommendation of the district administration and declared it as a tourist destination. To develop it as a tourist destination, the government prepared a 250-page master plan. The government believes that it will provide civic amenities and facilities that will benefit the common people. As a result, more tourists will be able to visit Parasnath Hill, boosting the state’s tourism industry. After the declaration of Parasnath Hill as a tourist spot by the state government, more people who do not follow the Jain religion started to visit the place. Among them, there were lots of people who did something that was against their religion or that hurt their religious sentiments (like littering, throwing bones, throwing liquor bottles around, etc.). As it’s one of the holiest sites for them, it hurts them deeply.
Their feelings came out in public in the form of protests against the government all over India.
As per PIB central government minister/official had meetings and is in contact with people from Jain religion. and has asked the state to take proper measures to ensure that no one’s religious sentiment gets hurt.
